Year 12: GCSE exams, results and what comes next

Year 12 is the second GCSE year and the end of compulsory schooling. It runs two things at once: the exam series, and the decision about what happens in September.

The dates for summer 2027

When What
From Monday 1 March 2027 Coursework moderation and speaking and listening windows open
Monday 5 April to Friday 30 April 2027 Modern language speaking tests
Tuesday 4 May 2027 Written papers begin
Monday 21 June 2027 Last scheduled written paper
Wednesday 23 June 2027 Contingency day: keep it free
Thursday 19 August 2027 Results issued

School dates such as mocks and study leave are the school’s own. The national dates come from the CCEA timetable and are re-checked each September and January.

The exam season starts earlier than the exams

This is the thing families get wrong most often. The written papers begin in May, so May is when the house goes quiet. But coursework moderation windows open on 1 March, the modern language speaking tests run through April, and several subjects have practical or visiting examination periods in between. Those marks are worth a substantial share of a grade and they are gone before the first written paper is sat.

A pupil who starts revising when study leave begins has already handed over marks that were sitting on a calendar since February.

Reading a mock

The mock is the most useful marked paper of the two years, because it is long, it covers everything and it comes back with the wrong answers visible. The total is not the point. The list of topics that lost marks is the point, and worked through with spaced practice in the spring, that list is what moves a grade.

After Year 12

Compulsory school age ends at sixteen, so this is a genuine fork. The common routes are sixth form at the same school or another one, a further education college, or an apprenticeship. There are six regional colleges plus an agricultural college, and many schools work in partnerships that widen what is available at post-16 beyond their own timetable.

Two things are worth knowing before results day. Sixth forms set their own entry grades and they vary, so ask for them in writing during Year 12 rather than discovering them in August. And a GCSE grade is not finished business: universities here ask for GCSE English Language by name, and use GCSE results in selection for competitive courses.

What Fincho does in Year 12

Every date above sits on the exam roadmap with its source and a countdown, alongside the school’s own mock and coursework deadlines once they are added. Weak spots from mocks drive the weekly plan through the spring rather than a generic revision timetable. Revision mode pulls real past questions on a topic with the CCEA paper and mark scheme behind them, and Pip marks the attempt and explains what the mark scheme wanted.

Common questions

When are the 2027 GCSE exams?
The written papers run from Tuesday 4 May to Monday 21 June 2027, with a contingency day on Wednesday 23 June that has to be kept free. Morning papers normally start at 9.15am and afternoon papers at 1.30pm. Results are issued on Thursday 19 August 2027.
Does my child have to stay in school after Year 12?
Compulsory school age ends at sixteen, so leaving after Year 12 is lawful. The usual next steps are sixth form at the same or another school, a further education college, or an apprenticeship, and a careers adviser can talk any of them through.
How much does a GCSE grade matter after sixteen?
More than families expect. Queen's University Belfast requires GCSE English Language at grade C or 4 for every course, some courses add GCSE subject requirements, and GCSE performance is used in selection for the most competitive ones.
