Year 12: AS units that count, and the Skills Baccalaureate

Three subjects instead of nine or ten, each at a depth that surprises most students, usually with the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales alongside. And one structural fact that changes how the year should be treated.

The AS is not a rehearsal

Wales kept the AS coupled to the A Level. On the WJEC qualifications approved for Wales, AS units sat in Year 12 are worth 40% of the final A Level grade, and they are certificated results rather than school estimates. Qualifications Wales calls those approved qualifications; the designated ones from AQA, OCR and Eduqas keep the English shape, where the AS stands alone and contributes nothing.

In England the AS was decoupled and contributes nothing, which is why so much English advice describes Year 12 as a year to find your feet in. That advice is wrong here. A Welsh student who has a slow autumn is not losing a practice run, they are losing four tenths of a grade they cannot re-earn from scratch. Each unit can be retaken once, but a resit in Year 13 has to be carried on top of a full Year 13.

The exam window

The summer 2027 AS and A Level exams run from Monday 10 May 2027 to Friday 18 June 2027, with contingency sessions on Wednesday 23 June that candidates must stay available for. Coursework deadlines land well before that, through the winter and early spring.

Where the Skills Baccalaureate fits

The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales is a Level 3 qualification equivalent in size and demand to an A Level, graded A* to E. It is built from three projects rather than exams: a global community project, a future destinations project, and a larger individual project.

Two things about it are worth planning for. It is the same size as a fourth subject, so a student carrying three A Levels and the Baccalaureate is carrying four Level 3 courses, not three and a hobby. And its deadlines are set inside term time by the school rather than by a national timetable, which means they collide with everything else unless somebody puts them on the same calendar.

Choosing courses honestly

Universities publish entry requirements per course: a typical offer, required subjects, sometimes GCSE minimums. Because AS results exist in Wales, a Welsh application carries more real evidence than an English one at the same point, which cuts both ways. Read a few course pages in the spring of Year 12 rather than in October of Year 13, and keep a shortlist with a range in it.
