The dates
Clearing
Clearing opens weeks before results day and is already listing vacancies by the time grades arrive.

On A Level results day UCAS updates early in the morning, before schools open. The firm choice is confirmed if its conditions are met, otherwise the insurance choice, otherwise Clearing, which has been listing vacancies since early July.
GCSE results a week later arrive on the CCEA scale, which runs A* to G with a C* sitting between B and C. The C* is specific to Northern Ireland and is the grade families most often have to look up, so it is worth knowing before the envelope is opened rather than after.
GCSE results here decide the Year 13 subjects, and because the AS already counts towards the A Level, that choice starts producing marks within twelve months. A subject picked on results day is not a trial run.

Common questions
- When is GCSE results day 2027 in Northern Ireland?
- Thursday 19 August 2027. A Level results are the Thursday before, 12 August.
- What is a C* grade?
- A CCEA grade sitting between B and C, introduced in 2019 when GCSE grading changed here. It has no equivalent on the 9 to 1 scale used in England, which is why comparisons across the two need care.
- Do results decide which subjects can be carried into Year 13?
- In practice yes. Schools set their own entry requirements for each subject, and because the AS taken at the end of Year 13 counts towards the A Level, the choice made in August starts earning marks quickly.
