Year 14: A2, resits and the application at the same time

Year 14 is the last year of school and it carries three jobs at once: the A2 units, a decision about resitting AS units, and the university application. They compete for the same autumn.

The other 60 per cent

The A2 units are worth 240 of the 400 uniform marks in a full A Level. The AS marks from last summer are already banked at 160. Nothing about that changes unless a unit is re-sat, so a student arriving into Year 14 already knows roughly where they stand, which is unusual and useful.

There is no terminal rule at this level. Unlike GCSE, the rules set no minimum share of assessment that must be taken at the end. In practice the units are only available in the summer series, so that is when they are sat.

The resit decision, and when to make it

An AS unit can be re-sat once and the higher uniform mark counts. That is a real second chance and it costs something specific: the resit sits in the same exam weeks as the A2 papers, so a student choosing it is sitting more exams in the same fortnight, in a subject whose content they last studied a year ago.

The mistake is leaving this to February. By then the entry has usually gone in, the offers are already held, and the choice has effectively been made by default. It is an autumn conversation, and the question is not whether the AS mark could be better. It is whether the marks that resit displaces are worth less than the ones it might gain.

The application on top

The UCAS deadline for most courses is 18:00 on Wednesday 13 January 2027, and 18:00 on Thursday 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses. Both fall in the same term as the first A2 assessments and the resit decision.

After Year 14

University is the common route but not the only one. Further education colleges run courses to degree level, apprenticeships take sixteen and over and pay a wage, and a gap year is respectable when it has a purpose rather than a gap in it.
