Clearing

Clearing opens weeks before results day and is already listing vacancies by the time grades arrive.

  1. Friday 2 July 2027
    UCAS Clearing opensSource

On A Level results day UCAS updates first thing in the morning, before most schools open their doors. If the conditions of the firm choice are met the place is confirmed there and then; if not, the insurance choice; if neither, Clearing. Clearing itself has been open since early July, so the vacancies are already listed by the time results appear.

GCSE results day a week later decides sixth form and college places rather than university ones. Most offers are conditional on a small number of grades, often including English and maths, and most schools will talk to a student who has missed one by a mark.

The useful preparation is unglamorous: know the firm and insurance choices, know the numbers each one asked for, and know who to phone if a grade lands under. A remark is possible but it takes weeks, so the decision on the day is made with the grades as they arrived.
