Clearing
Clearing opens weeks before results day and is already listing vacancies by the time grades arrive.

On A Level results day UCAS updates early in the morning. The firm choice is confirmed if its conditions are met, otherwise the insurance choice, otherwise Clearing, which has been open and listing vacancies since early July.
GCSE results a week later come on the A* to G scale that Wales kept when England moved to numbers. On the unitised courses the grade is an aggregate of units sat across the two years, so a result in August is the end of a longer arithmetic rather than a verdict on one fortnight in May.
If a unit went badly there is more room here than families expect. Units can be retaken, and on the WJEC maths course a pupil under 16 may attempt a unit twice before a fresh start is needed. That is a conversation to have with the school in the week after results, not in October.

Common questions
- When is GCSE results day 2027 in Wales?
- Thursday 19 August 2027, the same day as the rest of the UK outside Scotland. A Level results are the Thursday before, 12 August.
- What grades will the results show?
- A* to G. Wales kept the letter scale when England moved to 9 to 1, and the made-for-Wales GCSEs are graded on it too.
- Can a unit be retaken after results?
- Usually yes, in a later series. The rules differ by subject: on WJEC maths a candidate under 16 may attempt a unit twice, and a third attempt means re-entering every unit. Ask the school before assuming a resit is free.
